The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 (chassis code BNR34) was produced from January 1999 to August 2002. It was the final generation of the Skyline GT-R before Nissan introduced the standalone GT-R R35. Nissan never sold it new in the U.S., so every one here is a Japanese-market import, and all are right-hand drive. Approximately 11,500 were built, making it one of the most sought-after models in the JDM collector car market.
Engine and drivetrain
The R34 uses the RB26DETT, a 2.6L twin-turbo inline-six. Nissan rated it at 280 PS (276 hp) and 289 lb-ft of torque, in line with Japan’s voluntary power cap. Real output is usually higher, and many owners have tuned it well beyond that. It’s paired with a Getrag 6-speed manual (there was no automatic) and the ATTESA E-TS all-wheel-drive system, which sends power to the rear and shifts it to the front when needed. Super HICAS rear-wheel steering and Brembo brakes were standard.
Trim levels
- GT-R: The base model.
- V-Spec: Adds a carbon-fiber rear diffuser, stiffer suspension and an upgraded AWD system with active differential.
- V-Spec II: Introduced with the 2000 update. It adds a carbon-fiber hood with a NACA duct and revised suspension tuning.
- M-Spec: Tuned for comfort, with softer suspension and a leather interior.
- V-Spec II Nür / M-Spec Nür: Built in 2002 as the final run. Only 1,000 were made (718 V-Spec II Nür and 282 M-Spec Nür), with a stronger engine than the standard cars. These are the most sought-after R34s.
What to check before buying
- Modifications: Many R34s have been tuned, so look for a documented engine rebuild and aftermarket parts.
- Mileage: Japanese odometers read in kilometers, so convert before comparing cars.
- Auction grade: Check the grade sheet and inspection photos for rust, repainted panels and accident repair.
- Service history: Look for evidence of regular maintenance, especially on the engine and AWD system.
- Import rules: Under the U.S. 25-year rule, a car becomes eligible for import once it is 25 years old, counted from its month of manufacture. Eligibility doesn’t mean it’s road legal everywhere, because each state sets its own registration and emissions rules (California is the strictest).
The R34 GT-R is now a collector car, an iconic JDM sports car. Clean, original examples have appreciated for years, and the best trims and low-mileage cars sell at a premium.
